(b) What day of the week was it? To answer the first part, we subtract 10: 45 from 05: 18 To do this we must borrow an hour and borrow a day – that is 24 hours. The result is 18:23 on the 24-hour clock, or 6:23 p.m. To check the calculation, we add 10: 45 to 18: 33 on the right and arrive back at 29: 18 or 5: 18 am. Solution We first find the total duration of the three tasks. We convert the 152 min to 2 hr 32 min. We then find the total duration. This is done on the left and comes to 6 hr 54 min. We subtract 6: 54 from 5: 15 pm to arrive at 10:21 am. On the right we check the subtraction by adding back 6:54 to 10:21. We arrive at 17:15 on the 24-hour clock, or 5: 15 p.m. Answer: I started at 10: 21 am. SLIDE 11 The year is divided into 12 months. There are 365 days in a normal year, and 366 days in a Leap Year. By working out the prime factorisation of 365 and 366 show that neither is divisible by 12, and hence that it is impossible to have twelve months with an equal number of days. SLIDE 12 365 is an odd number and cannot be divisible by 12 which is even. and both 5 and 73 are prime numbers. Hence, 366 is divisible by 6 but not by 12. Alternatively, the last two digits of 366 is 66, which is not divisible by 4; hence, 366 is not divisible by 4 and so cannot be divisible by 12.
